4x4 Touring Ute Fit-Outs: Trays, Canopies & Off-Road Gear
A 4x4 touring ute lives a tougher life than a city work ute — dust, corrugations, mud, salt, water crossings, days off-grid. Here’s the complete fit-out: tray and canopy choice, water, power, recovery gear, lighting and awnings.

Start with the right tray and canopy
Sealed and reinforced is the rule. The Off-Road Aluminium Tray is purpose-built for it — alloy (no rust), sealed against dust and water, reinforced for corrugations. Pair with the Offroad Canopy for full dust-sealed touring storage, or the 35th Anniversary Off-Road Tray for the flagship build.
Water & power for off-grid days
- Water tanks — headboard or under-tray. Plan ~5 L per person per day.
- Auxiliary battery + DC-DC charger — runs your fridge, lights, charging without flattening the starter.
- 12V outlets and USB for fridge, devices, lighting.
- Inverter if you need 240V at camp.
Storage & organisation
- Internal canopy fit-out — drawers, shelves, fridge slide.
- Rolla drawers for heavy gear.
- Sealed under-body boxes for the kit you don’t need daily.
Recovery & access
- MAXTRAX recovery boards.
- Rated recovery points — never use a tie-down for recovery.
- Bull bar + winch.
- 270° awning for shade at camp.
- Work and scene lights.
Watch your payload
Touring gear adds up fast — water (1 kg/L), fridge, tools, food, fuel jerries. Stay under your GVM (see our GVM guide) and choose alloy over steel where you can to preserve payload.
