Ute Canopies: The Complete Australian Buyer’s Guide

A ute canopy is an enclosed, lockable body that turns your tray-back or cab-chassis ute into secure, weatherproof storage — keeping tools and gear dry, dust-free and out of sight. Duratray designs and builds aluminium and steel canopies and service bodies in Australia, fitted to suit single, extra and dual-cab utes.

What is a ute canopy?

A ute canopy is a hard-walled, lockable enclosure fitted to the back of a ute. It replaces an open tray (or sits on one) so your load is protected from weather, dust and theft. Canopies suit tradies who carry expensive tools, fleets that need secure storage, and 4x4 owners who want a touring set-up.

There are two broad approaches:

  • Tray-back canopy — a canopy that mounts onto an existing ute tray. Flexible and cost-effective.
  • Chassis-mount canopy / service body — a one-piece body mounted straight to the cab-chassis, maximising internal space and payload. Ideal for heavy-duty trade and fleet use.

Aluminium vs steel canopies

Aluminium canopies are lighter, which protects your payload and resists corrosion — a big plus in coastal Queensland. Steel canopies are tougher against impacts and cheaper to repair. Most trade and touring buyers choose aluminium for the weight saving; heavy industrial users sometimes prefer steel. We break this down in detail in our aluminium vs steel guide.

Canopy types & cab configurations

Your cab configuration determines the canopy length. Duratray builds for single, extra and dual-cab utes across the popular makes — Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger (including the Ranger Super Duty), Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50 and more.

What to look for in a quality canopy

Not all canopies are built the same. Look for:

  • Weather & dust sealing — proper seals matter on dirt roads.
  • Internal fit-outs — drawers, shelving and dividers from our internal fit-outs range keep gear organised.
  • Payload & GVM — lighter alloy construction preserves how much you can legally carry.
  • Warranty & local support — every Duratray body is Australian-made and backed by our 5-year warranty.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a ute canopy cost in Australia?
Prices depend on material, size and fit-out. Bolt-on tray canopies start lower, while chassis-mount service bodies cost more because they replace the tray entirely. Request a quote with your vehicle and we’ll give you an exact price.
How heavy is a ute canopy?
A typical bolt-on aluminium canopy weighs in the order of 100–180 kg depending on size; steel canopies and full chassis-mount service bodies weigh more. The lighter the canopy, the more payload you keep on the road.
How do you fit (install) a canopy to a ute?
A bolt-on canopy mounts to the existing ute tray using brackets and bolts at the tray’s tie-down points. Chassis-mount canopies replace the tray entirely and bolt directly to the cab-chassis. We do the fitting at our Capalaba workshop — book in here.
Can you remove a canopy from a ute?
Yes. A bolt-on tray-back canopy can be unbolted and lifted off so the tray underneath is usable again. A chassis-mount service body is part of the body and isn’t designed to come on and off.
How do you seal a ute canopy against water and dust?
Quality dust and rubber seals around the doors and the canopy-to-tray join are key — especially if you’re on dirt roads. All Duratray canopies are sealed for Australian conditions; check seals occasionally and replace any that have hardened.
How do you keep a ute canopy cool?
Insulation, light-coloured finishes and vents make a big difference. A roof vent or 12V fan helps move hot air, and a roof rack with a shade or awning keeps direct sun off. Talk to us about internal fit-out options.
Can I claim a ute canopy on tax?
If the canopy is used for your business, the cost (and any finance interest) is generally deductible — and may be eligible for instant asset write-off depending on the rules in force. Always check with your accountant for your situation.
Should I get an aluminium or steel canopy?
Aluminium is lighter (better payload, rust-free) and suits most trade and touring buyers; steel is tougher against impacts and cheaper to repair. See our aluminium vs steel comparison.
Will a canopy fit my dual-cab ute?
Yes — we build canopies for single, extra and dual-cab utes across all popular makes including HiLux, Ranger, Ranger Super Duty and D-Max.
Should I choose a tray or a canopy?
Choose an open tray for maximum loading flexibility and large or awkward loads; choose a canopy when security and weather protection matter most. Many buyers run a tray with a removable canopy to get both.
What is a service body?
A service body is a chassis-mounted canopy with built-in compartments and shelving for trades and fleets — maximising secure, organised storage and payload.
