Ute Drawers: Rolla, Trundle & Under-Tray Drawer Buyer’s Guide

A good drawer system turns dead space inside your canopy or under your tray into organised, secure, easy-access storage. Rolla drawers, trundle drawers and under-tray drawers all do the same job differently — here’s how to pick the right one.

What’s a trundle drawer?

A trundle drawer is a heavy-duty drawer that runs on wheels or rollers in a track — it pulls out smoothly even when loaded with tools, generators or recovery gear. The "trundle" name comes from the long-throw runners that let you access the back of the drawer without climbing in. It’s the workhorse drawer style for serious builds.

A rolla drawer is similar — drawer-on-runners — but typically uses ball-bearing slides rather than the heavier trundle hardware. Lighter loads, smoother feel. Most Duratray fit-outs use one or the other depending on what you’re carrying.

Where the drawer goes — and how much it holds

  • Under-tray drawers use the dead space between the chassis rails and the tray floor — typically one long drawer, around 100 kg capacity, perfect for tools you don’t need to climb up to.
  • In-canopy rolla / trundle drawers mount on the canopy floor with shelf space above for soft kit — 100–150 kg per drawer, often run in pairs.
  • Above-body box drawers sit inside a jumbo above-body toolbox, useful when you have an open tray (no canopy) but want organised storage.

What it costs

Drawer prices depend on size, capacity and quality of hardware. Single rolla drawers start in the low hundreds; full twin-trundle canopy fit-outs (with dividers, runners and a slide-out worktop) run into the low thousands. Frequently asked questions

What is a trundle drawer for a ute?
A heavy-duty long-throw drawer that runs on rollers — pulls smoothly even fully loaded with tools, generators or recovery gear. The standard "workhorse" drawer for serious ute builds.
Rolla drawer vs trundle drawer — what’s the difference?
Both are drawers-on-runners. Rolla drawers typically use ball-bearing slides for lighter loads and smoother feel. Trundle drawers use heavier wheel-and-track hardware for bigger loads and longer throw.
Can I fit a trundle drawer under my ute tray?
Yes — under-tray trundle drawers use the dead space between the chassis rails. Most popular utes can take one; let us know your tray and we’ll confirm fitment.
How much weight can a ute drawer hold?
Typical rolla drawers carry 100+ kg distributed; heavy-duty trundle drawers handle more. Always size to what you actually carry, not the maximum.
Single drawer or twin?
Twin drawers split the load and give two access zones (e.g. tools left, recovery gear right). Single is simpler and gives one long usable space.
Do ute drawers lock?
They sit inside a lockable canopy, under-tray locker or toolbox — that’s the security layer. Most drawers also have internal latching so they stay shut in transit.
Can I retrofit drawers to my existing canopy?
Yes — most canopies can take a retrofit drawer system. Send us the internal dimensions and we’ll spec it.
Are your drawers Australian-made?
Yes — designed and built at our Capalaba workshop, with quality hardware and our standard 5-year warranty.
